Just a quick update to reassure everyone that work is ongoing, and will resume full-tilt after the holidays and my qualifying exams are past. Time for a well-deserved vacation!

  1. I acutally liked the picture from 22 september more.
This one had a bit too much details crammed into it.
Remember, more is not always good. More can sometimes be…too much.
    Keep it simple 😉

  2. I love this game so much so far. I can’t wait for it to be released, good luck on your exams and hope you can complete the game! Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays!

  3. Hello,
Really i am impresed, i mean… Big Wow for you, i am a fan of many computer games and when i saw your gameplay videos, i was like System Shocked, Deus exed, Syndicatzed, Crusadered, Shadowruned over and and much, much more.
You can look at also great game named Underrail, but yours is in real time with isometric graphics that is great, great fluid of action, great ideas of implementing stealth(kneeling, proning under the table!!!), great use of weapons, great use of meele combat, great hacking mechanics, great…. i am begining to suffer from lack of words, put it simply just pure greatness. Big bravo for you. Cant wait to play it.

  4. Hi Rick, agree with Heelo, just an amazing gameplay. Surprised that you answered to all of the post of this thread that’s a part of why I prefer to pay for indie games.
I’m a developper too but stopped developping games since I worked in a big company. I’m still trying too be up to date and looking for the way I can do it (I’m a JEE dev) but don’t have a lot of time to do it.
What kinf of studies are you doing ?
Could you give me some details about the game technology ?

Hope you had good results for your exams 😉

    • Yeah, it’s tricky balancing game making (my hobby) with everything else. I’m working on a PhD in astrophysics. I’m hoping that donations from DataJack could help fund my research!

I’m actually making this in Multimedia Fusion but I think I’ve just about pushed it to the limit. I think my next game will be less complex computationally, or I’ll move to a different toolset. MMF alleviates a lot of difficulty but creates some of its own.

      Thanks for your support!

        • Yeah, I create all the assets. It is time-consuming, but one of the things I like about game creation is how it involves a range of skill sets.

I’m sure the art could be a lot better if I had a dedicated pixel artist!

  5. I just want to say that it’s so nice to see you making games again! I grew up on all of the old Epic Banana games after discovering A Day At Work on a Mac Addict CD. I used to frequent MacFixation and even got my feet wet in KnP and Cocoa as a young lad.

DataJack seems very reminiscent of The Establishment, a game I still fire up my old Powerbook for from time to time. I have high hopes for this game, and I really enjoy reading your developer blog. In another comment, you mentioned your next project. Is a spiritual successor to the unfinished Another Day At Work: Wednesday in the pipeline? 😀

    • Thanks for the interest Brian! I’ve been getting back to work on DJ in a big way lately and want to release it sooner rather than later.
When I started DataJack I described it as a “spiritual successor” to The Establishment, and I based most of its early development on ideas I’d formed back then. It’s since developed into its own thing entirely.

As for my next game: I think plenty of games since the A Day at Work series have fleshed that idea out thoroughly- just look at the GTA series (GTA III came out during development of ADAW2.) I have a lot of other, quite different ideas that I’m working out in my head, which is most of the reason why I want to get DataJack out soon!

      • You’ve certainly always had an eye for unique gameplay elements. Who else would have thought of making a sandbox game about filming a yogurt commercial? Whatever you’ve got up your sleeve, I’m sure it will be great. I’ll be keeping an eye out!
